2020 Planning Party

2019 Planning Party

I'm joining Quilting Jet Girl Yvonne's 2020 planning party. We're sharing plans, goals and resolutions for the new year. She's giving away lots of nice prizes, so it's definitely worth checking out and joining in!

Tubs stuffed with neglected FQs
I'm not normally one for setting things out in advance like this, but had already been thinking about playing a game with myself in 2020. Normally I participate in the Rainbow Scrap Challenge. This year I'm changing it up a bit and making it the Rainbow Stash Challenge. And more specifically, the fat quarters in my stash. They have been languishing, unused, lately. So as Angela announces the new color each month, I'm going to try to make a dent in the FQs of that color.

Deep drawer o' orphans

In addition, I have enough orphan block projects for Covered in Love that each one can be kinda-sorta assigned to a color:

Red: Patriotic red, white and blue orphans
Pink: Caribbean houses
Orange: Orange/green mix orphans
Yellow: Donated kit of yellow and blue florals
Lime green: Lime stars
Dark green: Green and purple mix orphans
Aqua: Primarily aqua mix orphans
Light blue: More patriotic blocks and scraps
Dark blue: Lone star top to be finished
Purple: Purple and chocolate brown orphans
Brown: Autumnal blocks
Black: Bright colors with black background orphans

Big stack o' panels

I also want to make a dent in my novelty and themed fabrics and panels. So I've divided them into 12 subjects and will draw one out of a hat each month to work on. Doesn't this sound like a fun game? Time to get these happy fabrics launched!

Cats
Dogs
Birds
Butterflies
Fish
Adult beverages: coffee/wine/beer/cocktails
Horses
Science/space/Earth
Trains
Camping/fishing
Food
Scooters

(Edited to add:) I went through my panels a week after writing this and decided to add 5 more themes. Time to stop hoarding these panels!
Farm/Chickens
Jungle
Tools/Trucks
Dancing/Music
Beach

I know myself well enough to expect a LOT of deviation from the plan! After all squirrels come in all colors, and if trains are chosen for purple month but I have some great purple butterflies, then I MIGHT get derailed. (Heh. See what I did there?) But it doesn't really matter, you know? Whatever gets worked on is fine!

Do you make these kinds of advance plans? Or are you a "fly by the seat of your pants" type?

  1. I have plans but not specific to certain projects. I know myself too well for that (darn squirrels). i like the Rainbow STASH challenge - that's me, too.

  2. I tend to be a planner, but I'm not a slave to my plan. Sometimes you just have to make adjustments. I like your idea to use up those older fat quarters and the orphans for Covered in Love quilts. Wishing you a very successful 2020.

  3. Well, great minds think alike! I haven’t formalized my plans yet (although I should by joining in with Yvonne’s party), I did start a list and private Pinterest Board of colors that will get special quilts made from scraps (and stash as necessary) in 2020. But because much of my time is now spent quilting and binding quilts for Quilts for Kids, I don’t know how well I’ll keep up with RSC, QFK, UFOs and still do a monthly quilt. I just noticed all those letter abbreviations - Quilty alphabet soup! Anyway, your plan is genius, especially since you’ve built flexibility into it!!

  4. Ooh, I didn't know about the Rainbow Scrap Challenge, and I love your idea of making it a Rainbow Stash Challenge! Maybe I will play along in 2020... Hee hee! Good luck with your goals and happy new year!

  5. Great planning.... a list is a good way to sort of stay on track even if a bit of deviation happens along the way.... well isn't that the way we discover new things and experiences???? Will be joining you with rainbow scrap challenge I think next year....

  6. I always love a list too... but don't always stick to it! A rainbow stash challenge sounds like a great way to 'rediscover' your stash! Good luck with your goals, and Merry Christmas!

  8. It will be fun to see how closely you do follow the rules or don't,LOL. You know me I kinda fly by the seat of my pants most of the time.

  9. I tend to be a planner, but that's never stopped me from chasing a squirrel project. Have fun with your planned projects and whatever else pops up!

  11. Like your plans! I love seeing how you put together those leftover blocks and find a theme to make things go together. 2020 should be a fun year!
I used to plan things out and line up the parts I would need. Now I am lucky to start one! Just my stage of quilting life.

  12. I admire planners, I really do. I quasi-plan. I dream of having the perfect plans, all laid out, looking lovely. It never works for me. I am definitely in the fly-by-the-seat group. I'm coming to terms with that. However, I do keep a schedule/calendar of events, particularly as I pull activities together for our local quilt group. When it comes to quilting, I've come to realize I do better if I make what I want when I want. You have some good plans in place, Louise. It should be a good year for you!

  13. I don't follow a formal plan or make a list of UFOs because my train is derailed right out of the gate (or should that be station?)`. We leave for 3 months in FL and TX in early Jan and I can't take much of my stash or scraps with me. So when I get home in late March I'm already running behind schedule. I do have some things I want to get done in 2020, but won't tie myself to specific deadlines. It works for me and pretty much nobody else cares.

  16. Sounds like a good starting place even if you do go off track. I've been thinking about a few things I want to accomplish next year but haven't taken the time yet to sort it all out. Wish you luck with your 2020 goals. Merry Christmas.

  17. I'm like you: I make plans but oh I deviate. This is really an interesting way to tackle the year, and I love what you've done for our RSC.... worth a thought as I mull over my own upcoming 2020 post!

  18. Having a plan can help me find focus when I would otherwise wonder 'what to do'. Having squirrels that are exciting come up to work on are joyful, though, and leaving yourself open to things that are inspiring is wise. I hope you have a wonderful 2020!

  20. You have got plenty to keep you out of trouble, or in it, depending on how you look at it. Good thing squirrels don’t hop on boats too often, or do they? May 2020 be a great year of quilting what you want and loving it.
