Robin the Panda

Hello, quilty friends! It's been a while, hasn't it? I took a little vacation from blogging, but not from sewing, so I have some finishes to share with you. This piece is Robin the Panda.

Robin is named after the way he was created, as a round-robin group effort. Five members of the Sunshine Online Quilt Guild, including me, added something to Robin's little world.

I made the center block and then shipped it across the country to another person. She added the forest at Robin's feet. Then the bamboo stalks and appliqued leaves to each side were made by another person.

Then a black and white striped border was added. Then the darling bear paw print blocks were added. A purple outer border framed it all up.

After the fifth round, it was returned to me for quilting and binding. Some of the purple fabric was sent to me by the final participant, and I used it as part of the pieced backing.

Robin the Panda was donated to Quilts Beyond Borders, one of the charities that Sunshine supports. I hope he makes a child happy! It was super fun to be part of a round robin. Have you ever sent blocks or a partially finished quilt to someone else for something like this?

  2. Cute quilt and I like the idea of a round robin. I saw one group did a 'stay at home one that looked fun too. Very creative with leaves and paws and a panda, oh my!

  10. TOO cute, Louise!! I've always shied away from Round Robins, as I'm not always good with deadlines. Currently doing the Stay at Home Round Robin, though!

  11. What a cute quilt. One of my favourite toys when I was a little girl was a panda, I called him Peter Panda . Some child will love this pretty quilt. Lovely colours.

  15. Such a whimsical quilt! There is definitely a lot of artistic quilty talent in it, and a panda-loving child (In other words, any child) will be over the moon to receive it.) I never cease to be amazed (and maybe somewhat intimidated) by the wonderfully cohesive results of Round Robin quilts. So, I guess that’s why I haven’t participated. I do like the stay-at-home version I’ve seen this year. Maybe something like that would get me closer to being comfortable with a roving one.

  18. Ahoy, Louise! So glad to see you back posting. I've been following Sean's blog so I knew you were o.k. Robin the Panda is absolutely precious. I've never done a Round Robin but those that I've seen have always turned out fantastic. Little Robin is so very, very cute & it's going to the be a treasure for a child. Thank you so much for being the "starter" of this quilt. It's adorable!!!

  20. I've been thinking of you and wondering how (and where) you fared during the blast of winter. Love the Robin quilt, it turned out looking very well planned for a round robin. I've never participated in one until the virtual Stay At Home round robin by Quilting Gail, and it's a lot of fun.

  22. So nice to hear from you, Louise. I was beginning to wonder. The Panda quilt is so cute. I've participated in two round robins and they went well. Some friends have done some also, even our guild, but a few were disappointed either they weren't forwarded in a timely manner, or they never heard from the quilter again. Sad. I'm now doing a Stay at Home Round Robin by Quilting Gail. I think I like that best.
    Blessings!
