Troubles with Blogger

I learned today that there is some sort of problem with comments on Blogger blogs, including mine. Normally, when you leave a comment here, I get an email. That email has your address on it, and your comment is the message. It's a simple matter for me to hit "reply" and continue the conversation.

I love that! Getting your kind, funny, inquisitive, supportive comments make the work of blogging completely worthwhile to me. I try to reply to each and every one of them unless you are a no-reply commenter.

However, that system seem to be broken right now. In order to see your comments, I must go to a special comment moderation page, click through to your Blogger/Google profile to get your email address, copy that, open my email, and start an email from scratch. I can't even cut and paste your comment, which is super frustrating!

I really hope that Blogger fixes this soon soon soon, because I have no idea how to fix it from here. If you have your own Blogger blog, you might want to double check that you are getting comments correctly. I know most of the QBS (Quilt Blogo-Sphere) is eager to recognize and encourage commenting to keep our community connected and vibrant.

The photo on this post is a ziplock full of my dark background strip scraps. I've set these aside to mail to Janice at Color, Creating and Quilting, who needs them for a new project. I'm happy to help her out, because that's just the sort of fun interaction I love so much about our little online world. Meanwhile, I'll try to keep up with your comments using the slow, frustrating method. Thanks for your patience!

  1. What a pain...don't bother to reply. A while back I was not getting comments or some could not leave them. I had to change my settings from the embedded comment section like you have to the other style of a pop up. It straightened itself out now....I think.

  3. We are all experiencing this problem. It has to do with the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) that went into effect in the EU on May 25. It affects the enire worldwide internet community. Basically, it’s a privacy issue, and lack of compliance means fines. So many large companies like Blogger/Google are disabling commenting functions until they can find a way around it or a way to be in compliance. Who suffers? We do. It’s not like we didn’t have the ability to hide our email addresses before if we wanted to!

I’ve got many comments on my blog to respond to as well. We all do! I guess I’ll set up a separate file on my desktop with email addresses gleaned from previous comments (hopefully in my trash can or friend file after responding to them) and cut and paste using that. Pain in the posterior, eh?

  4. Oh no!!! I agree the chit chat and happy mail between us all makes this blogging special and fun. I’ll have to check mine.

  5. I'm another who has the problem with comments not coming through to mail. I had switched to the pop-up comment window but switched over to embedded to be able to reply directly. Interesting to read the information from Cathy.

  6. It is a pain isn't it. I hope it gets fixed as well. You don't have to respond to this one either. I'm finding it difficult to find the time to respond. If I get the address up I forget what the commenter said etc. I can't even imagine continuing to blog if this doesn't get sorted out.

  7. I feel for those of you who use Blogger. So far Wordpress is working okay, but I've been checking my site. Let's hope this gets fixed soon!

  8. For now I am responding to comments on the blog itself -- unless I already have the commenter's email in my contact list. Hoping the powers that be are working on a solution! (no need to respond - merely commiserating with all of you here).

  9. It is a real pain. Please do not feel that you need to reply to mine. I am having the same issues and many times I cannot access the e-mail addresses.

  11. Hey guys! I think if we click the “notify me” box below it will send out comments directly to our emails. Louise, let me know if this worked. Keeping my fingers crossed it does. V

  12. Very frustrating! I am going to send this via email to you so you don't have to cut and paste to respond. Thank you for mentioning my project! I had meant to do a blog post yesterday showing what I was up to but it didn't happen. Maybe today!

  13. Looks like we are all in the same frustrated boat, lol! Reading and replying to comments through email is definitely an important part of blogging to me. I do hope they find a fix for this problem, as I've been missing my quilt-y conversations! Meanwhile, I will keep reading and enjoying your posts!

  15. Ditto to all here. I am devastated as I have a very hard time with technological organization as it is. I don’t like the embedded reply feature as I tend to be more personal in my replies and like the privacy of emailing them. I’ll just keep watch I guess and hope I can follow what to do as it all gets sorted out. Not being able to have those fun conversations gives me the sads. (No need to reply.)

  16. I wondered why I got no mails from my posted comments. I thought the problem had to do with another problem with my iPad, which my techy granddaughter in no time after a frantic phone call. This just increases my frustration with Google, which intrudes on most of my attempts to do many things. I'll be sure to reply on your posts for now.

  18. Responding to comments via email is one of the best parts of the process. Here’s hoping it’s just a glitch and is corrected soon. No need to respond! XO

  19. I'm not getting comment notifications from either blogger or wordpress. It's a nuisance but there are workarounds for now. Blogger may catch on to that and take it away too. I hope they do figure something out, just a box to check to ok giving info, like the I am not a robot checkbox.

  20. Yikes! I just had this happen. :-/ Does that mean it isn't fixed yet? Or is it just my turn? It's so much better when things work as intended! Here's hoping it's all better now.
